Nicole Lassiter wants nothing more than to spend every day on her father's ship, the Bella Nicola. Unfortunately for Nicole, things just aren't that easy. Nicole's maternal grandmother wants Nicole--an American girl through and through--to stay in England and wed a man of good title and breeding. Her father plans to compete in the Great Circle Race, but he is completely determined to leave Nicole behind, her feet firmly planted on land. Then there's the danger to be found in a mysterious saboteur: someone who is determined to incapacitate as many ships--and the crews on board--to be certain that they don't win the race. And if all that weren't bad enough, Nicole is fighting a peculiar attraction to Derek Sutherland--peculiar because he is her father's most hated rival. Soon Nicole begins to wonder if losing the race is worth losing her heart to the enemy…
The last thing Captain Derek Sutherland needs is to deal with is a spy-no matter how alluring the spy can be. Derek doesn't have time to fight with the annoying, albeit enticing, Miss Lassiter. He has enough of his own demons to fight and that is taking up more than enough of his time. But soon Derek finds that he is quite unable to let Nicole go. Can a man who is trying desperately to outrun his past, ever slow down long enough to find the love of a lifetime?
THE CAPTAIN OF ALL PLEASURES is a fast-paced and entertaining read. The storyline was fresh and interesting and I absolutely loved the characters. Both main characters had many layers to them and one of the most enjoyable aspects of the story was in watching those layers slowly start to fall away to reveal their deepest fears, wants and desires. I loved Nicole! I felt that she was a truly strong heroine who knew her own mind and wasn't about to back down, no matter what. She found her perfect hero in Derek. He was a terrific-not to mention yummy--hero! Derek has a lot of issues he must resolve before he can be free to pursue the enthralling Nicole Lassiter. The unique storyline, which mostly takes place during the Great Circle Race, is just another added plus to an already enjoyable story.
THE CAPTAIN OF ALL PLEASURES is a terrific debut novel! While I do feel that the momentum slowed considerably before the end of the story, I still feel this is a solid read that is more than worth your time. Kresley Cole is a definite up and comer in the romance genre and I can't wait to read her next story, where the hero is Derek's respectable younger brother Grant.
With a unique storyline, fresh dialogue and engaging characters, THE CAPTAIN OF ALL PLEASURES more than hits the mark. I highly recommend this story and I can't wait to see what this talented new author has in store for us in the future!
