Paranormal, September 2000

Haunting Maiden Castle for hundreds of years Serena only longs to be done with the hordes of people that have descended the castle, disturbing her peace. And Serena knows just the way to do that. The story of Serena Clerenborn has been passed down through time, much exaggerated with terrifying proportions. Many believing she murdered her husband in a fit of insanity. Serena is all to eager to let them believe that if it will aid her in scaring them away from Maiden Castle. What better way than to terrify the servants into deserting Alex Woding therefore leaving him no choice but to leave.

Alex needing a break from his sisters, being the only male in his family, retreats to Maiden Castle to indulge his passion as a astronomer. What better place than Maiden Castle where he witnessed a spectacular event in his youth. Nor can he forget seeing a vision of Serena which resulted in his falling from the castle wall that fateful night. Does she still haunt these walls? Only time will tell as it soon does with crazy, frightful pranks being played on his servants that have many of them screaming in terror.

Serena soon moves her attentions to Alex but he's not as easily frightened and is determined to play as if he isn't aware of her even though he's uneasy with her constantly shadowing his every move. Serena doesn't know what to make of this, whether Alex is just pretending or if he really can't see her. Which makes her even more determined to get under his skin, which she proves successful at but also finds herself feeling things she's never felt before. But what can come of it when she's a ghost and Alex is living?

Lisa's created a wonderful heroine in Serena unlike many we see today in romance. I found her to be playfully wicked and refreshingly real. You have to feel sorry for Dickie and the other servants yet at the same time laugh at the delight in which Serena takes in playing games with them. She's bold, sassy, determined and sometimes trouble. And she's not what you'd call your typical small heroine, which was a refreshing change. Alex on the other hand is good at keeping Serena on her toes. He's the calm to her naughty.

One thing I would like to have seen done differently was the closeness and interaction between Serena and Alex developed earlier in the book than it was. At times I felt they were more friends than perspective lovers because it was developed a little late in the book to my liking. When they did connect though it was worth waiting for and I found myself choked up as this story played out in the end. I found the loves scenes to be wonderfully done. One of the best I've read in a long time was the opening love scene. Beautifully written without being too graphic for those that prefer the love scenes on the light side yet very sensual. If you're looking for something different and you love paranormals I recommend this book as an enjoyable read.
